Orton Plantation Gardens, begun in 1910,
were enlarged to their present size, about 20 acres, between
1935 and 1950.Formal beds dominated by annuals and perennials and
informal path borders lines with azaleas and camellias in
unknown numbers, and mixed pines and deciduous hardwoods
creating a thick canopy over the upper paths. Currently there
are 60 managed acres and 20 acres of self-guided walking
paths. |

The architecture
of the house (not open to the public) and the c. 1915 Luola's
Chapel seems reminiscent of the Tennessee Williams' deeper
South. There are ponds, lakes and lagoons in addition to the
Cape Fear River. |

| Orton
Plantation is a biological extravaganza unlike
anything else in the Region. "Among
the predominant species are camellias, azaleas,
flowering peach, daphne, hydrangea, crepe myrtle,
dogwood and colorful annuals in spring and summer.
Lawns and water gardens lend variety to the lush
vegetation. The woodlands are devoted largely to
pine forestry." The
